For Jade, a stay-at-home mom of five kids between the ages of 10 and 19, turning 40 hit harder than she expected. “It’s like I started noticing that everything was changing all at once,” she says. Among her biggest concerns: Forehead wrinkles, sagging skin, sunspots and limp hair that frustrated her daily. “It’s gray, it’s dry, and—while it’s always been thin—it’s now harder to style than ever,” she explained. “I just end up throwing it in a ponytail every day.” But now, thanks to these Mini-Makeovers, she doesn’t have to!
- Create Body & Bounce: Fine hair appears fuller when it’s above the shoulders, which is why Fennema gave Jade a collarbone-grazing cut with layers at the very end. “Shorter layers make thin hair look stringy, but these create movement and bounce,” she says.
- Try Bangs: “I thought bangs had to be bold and never would have considered them at my age, but these look amazing!” says Jade. The wispy fringe hides any forehead lines, and also adds softness and finish to her go-to ponytail on busy days.
Jade’s Reaction: She couldn’t stop smiling and was thrilled to learn that makeup doesn’t have to be a huge time commitment. “I look like I looked 20 years ago—actually, I look better! Knowing that I can do this myself makes all the difference.”
The Tip She’ll Take With Her: Jade says she’ll probably still have mascara-only makeup days, but she will definitely start curling her lashes first. “It makes such a huge difference!”
